Interconnectedness

Interactive light installation

Interconnectedness: [ˌɪntəkəˈnɛktɪdnəs]NOUN interconnectedness (noun) · inter-connectedness (noun) the state of being connected with each other.

As a follow up to my previous work about reconnecting with trees and our surroundings, this project addresses issues of interconnectedness among humans and the natural realm.

The aim of the work was to create a space of interaction between people and the natural environment, to allow them to connect in their own way with the space and create a visual communication that could go beyond the limits of our sight.

I wanted people to become one with the environment and feel a whole within the surroundings.

.

The creative process

Starting from a watercolour piece which aimed at the visualization of this concept, I then tried to figure out a shape, a line drawing that could have then been translated into an immersive 3D drawing in space.

I wanted to create a stream of lights that, by flowing into the environment, could have created a visual representation of the idea of interconnectedness and at the same time reveal it in its real form.

.

.

In order to make this possible I went out looking for locations and took measurements of how long the lights would have have to be.

My first location was in the woods; after having taken the measurements and bought 50m of lights I figured out that there were too many practical issues to make it work in the woods, above all the lack of such a powerful source of power.

.

.

So I re-did the measurements in a second location, trying to compromise among the features of the place and the length of the lights.

The second location, which was actually a private property, presented many advantages in terms of Covid restriction and availability of electricity from the house .

The installation

After a some days of installing and the help of a few people, I managed to set the lights in a way that almost matched the original drawing.

I did not necessarily wanted to include sound in the piece , since I preferred to maintain the original one, from nature, and I though that the lights did a great job in creating a new space, a reality to re-discover.

.

.

I did not want the LEDs to be too bold; I wanted them to reveal with the changing of the sunlight as to symbolize a connection that is always there but we do not have access to it unless we go beyond out fixed visual limits and start perceiving reality as a togetherness.

Summarizing

Interconnectedness is a large scale light installation result of the interaction of LED lights with people and the environment. These three elements, although they may not be considered proper materials, are indeed made of the same matter and are all connected by the same energy that animates all living beings and the world.

The light works as a connector among humans and nature, reshaping our perception of the space and questioning its visual limits. Thanks to its quality of overcoming the visual limits that define our reality, it presents the installation as a mix of lines and shapes that flow one into another rather than a sequence of defined figures.

The piece is then activated by the interaction of people with the space, which creates a symbolic visual connection among all the elements presented to those who are watching the piece from the outside.
The result is an everchanging work, created from the interconnectedness performed by all the elements, which now act as a whole.
